BECK ON BEANS: Tre Venezie Nero Barocco Dark Roast

Tre Venezie Nero Barocco Dark Roast

Yep! We've got another blend from Tre Venezie! I’ve reviewed a couple coffees from this company and really enjoyed them. Though, I’m not normally a dark roast girl, so this one had me worried.

It’s a very very dark roast. So much can go wrong. One second too long on the heat and you’ll have a bitter, carbon-filled cup on your hands. Roasting to a perfect dark is a game of finesse and exacting standards that I frankly don’t trust most roasters to maintain.

So, I was worried this roast would ruin my good opinion of Tre Venezie as a great, if not a little timid roaster.

Oh, me of little faith. 😏

Fragrance: This is a complex mix of florals and smoke. All the fruitiness has been roasted away, but what is left is a swirling sweetness and a bold presence that immediately beckoned me to tuck in.

Flavor: As I said, Dark roast can go terribly wrong very quickly. The perfect dark roast appears for milliseconds when exposed to the right temperature. Nailing a perfect dark roast is truly more art than science and Tre Venezie NAILED it. Whoever they have manning the pull button on the dark roaster deserves a promotion. This is a beautiful dark roast with all the earthy richness you hope for from a steaming, black cup. Dark cocoa, creamy nuttiness, and no bitterness whatsoever.  Perhaps the gentle touch that detracts from the Tre Venezie lighter roasts is exactly the genius of the dark roast.

This is my new late afternoon cup. All the great flavor and warmth of an expertly roasted coffee with a fraction of the caffeine content.

Recommended For:

  1. Sipping and savoring. Like the beautiful photos on the top of the KCup, this coffee is a journey. As the temperature lowers, the cocoa flavor takes center stage and the drink changes completely. Enjoy it!
  2. Dessert. This is the perfect way to wash down a delicious dinner. Preferably Italian style- prepared all day and enjoyed surrounded by people who love you.

Not Recommended For:

  1. Additives. I know. Dark roasts scream for cream and sugar most of the time. Correction: Bad dark roasts scream for them. Be brave and dive into this one without a life raft. I promise, the water is fine.
  2. Icing. It would probably make a lovely iced drink, but it feels like a waste. You would miss out on the beautiful progression of flavors as the cup cools. I mean, do what makes you happy, but IMO- save the fwappajappamochadunkerjavamatchawhackaccino for coffees that need the assistance.

Would I buy again?

I already have a big box and will definitely order more. Well done, Tre Venezie! This puppy is in your wheelhouse.
